The political background

Today’s political crisis in DR Congo is the result of the current government’s failure to hold elections and the refusal of president Joseph Kabila to publicly commit to stepping down at the end of his second and final mandate, which expired in December 2016 pursuant to the Constitution.

The elections scheduled for this year are the foundation on which our country’s future rests. It is vital that they are properly conducted and that they meet the very best standards of transparency, consensus and credibility in order to reflect the will of the people and form the basis for establishing the legitimacy necessary to rebuild DR Congo.
